The Internet Crime discussion list

Welcome to the Internet Crime Discussion List, moderated by Eoghan Casey of Knowledge Solutions LLC, http://www.corpus-delicti.com.

Computers connected to the Internet can be a source of evidence in a wide range of crimes; including trafficking in child pornography, solicitation of minors, stalking, harassment, unauthorized access to computer systems, fraud, extortion, distribution of computer viruses, theft of proprietary information, and defamation. Less obviously, rape, homicide, arson, kidnapping, and suicide can involve the Internet.

The Internet Crime mailing list is a forum for individuals who have an active role in the investigation and prosecution of crimes involving the Internet. The membership of this list includes, but is not limited to attorneys, forensic scientists, law enforcement, psychiatrists, and information security professionals.

The purpose of this list is to share practical knowledge and experience regarding the technical, investigative, and legal aspects of crimes that involve internetworked computers. For instance, topics of discussion include:

  • Internetworked computers as an extension of the crime scene
  • Forensic science and criminal profiling as it applies to Internet crime
  • Investigative techniques as related to Internet crime
  • Digital evidence
  • Threat management of cyberstalking
  • Using computer networks, particularly the Internet, as an investigative tool
  • Recognizing, collecting, documenting, preserving and examining digital evidence (evidence that is stored on or transmitted using computers)
  • Issues that arise in the courtroom when digital evidence is involved
  • Legal and jurisdictional considerations
  • Techniques and strategy for investigating crimes that involve computers and computer networks
  • Education, training and keeping up with technological developments
  • Reviews or comments on relevant news articles and books
