Brent's notes: This is a crucial work on the subject; an excellent compilation of studies by different minds. I highly recommend it. Pay close attention to the essay in the Foreword about "Looking only where the light is..." I mean pay really close attention.

I use this book often because it presents many sides and useful interpretations of the very complex issue of sexual assault.

One of the chapters that I point out to anyone who reads it is Ch. 11: Sex Offenders; A Feminist Perspective. A nice quote from the second page into the chapter is "The unanswered question posed by feminists in not why some men rape, but why most men do not." You know, because men have testosterone poisoning. It's a real page turner, that chapter.

Brent's notes: Excellent book, nice compilation of case studies. Good overview of typologies - see the review on the profiling shelf for this same book.

This is also the book that publishes research that Ressler and Douglas used to develop their serial killer typologies from. It presents the typologies in a much more useful, much more developed fashion. This book is also full of very insightfully chosen case studies.

Brent's notes: If I could have in my possession every article and every textbook written by Roy Hazelwood, then I could consider my reference resources vast. He is a brilliant profiler and has done some of the best applied research on sex crimes in this half century.

This compilation of works and research is a must have for any sex crimes investigator.

Their research is what lead me into the field myself, as an undergrad.

Brent's notes: Excellent work, nice compilation of case studies. Good overview of typologies and a lot of good thinking and research presented. I use this book for reference a lot. And Burgess and company did a very thorough job here and have created an invaluable resource.

Brent's notes: I have not read this book, but Dr. Hall is very well respected in his field, and he wrote a paper on self-cutting behavior in rape victims that was incredible.
